I don't think that high of a percentage of people search by typing in the term and extension (word.com)... unless they are going to a specific know website; ie google.com, or yahoo.com etc..
If I am searching for cheap hotels in London...I would search for "Cheap Hotels London" not CheapHotelsLondon.com. "Cheap Hotels London" give me the list of best ranked pages from which I choose the best ones to search throughu.
Accented IDN or plain, if you build a GREAT site, advertise, link, SEO, and maybe even pay for some hits via sponsoring the link you have a good chance to make your site a success.

Actually Bill, apparently 10-15% of all the searches conducted occur in precisely that manner. Type in keyword and add .com. I confess to having done the same before I got into domaining - now I just do it out of curiousity. I don't disagree with the idea that it is superior to build a great site however....

You are right about the "type in" factor; lets hope that it catches on in Japan, China, Russia, Thailand etc.
