Default China - Mainland broadband users soar over 100m

CHINA now has 137 million Internet users on the mainland, up 23.4 percent from a year ago, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) said today.

Among them, 104 million netizens surf the Internet via broadband, which accounted for 75.9 percent of the total, according to the CNNIC.

Male citizens still account for the majority of netizens, with the proportion reaching 58.3 percent out of the 137 million, according to the survey conducted by the CNNIC.

The number of netizens among the country's urban residents is 6.5 times more than in rural areas, the survey showed.

The number of broadband computers reached 41.2 million, accounting for 69.4 percent of the Internet accessible computers.

By the end of last year, China had 4.11 million domain names. About 1.8 million names ended with ".cn," up 64.4 percent from the 1.1 million a year ago, which grew much faster than the growth of ".com," the report said.

During the same period, China owned about 840,000 Websites as well as 17 million online mobile phone users, which accounted for 12.4 percent of the total netizens, according to the survey.
