McDonalds and Starbucks are successful businesses in many countries. In China, they provide products/services other Chinese businesses do not.
If you look at Baidu and Google, you see a different story. Baidu is not providing as quality service as Google, in my opinion. At least they are similar. But Baidu has much more market share than google (more than 60% vs 20%). One reason someone believe is that Baidu is a Chinese company and Google is a foreign company. Chinese do like their own companies. Baidu played some dirty tricks some years ago. But it is a company with limited power.
.cn is the only business of CNNIC, who is backed up by government. .cn means a lot of money for CNNIC. Promoting .cn is also a national interest of China, like in Russia.
I know some people do not like what I said, especially those who still want to buy more .cn. Unfortunately, I do not have any travel plan this July 4th...
