I see this as a very sly manuever to try to kill some of the anti-mobi shouts on Dnforum these last few weeks. Especially when the story starts out like this....

Quote:
A lot of jaws hit the floor when Flowers.mobi sold for $200,000 in an auction at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East conference in October. It was an unprecedented amount to pay for an unproven new extension and most assumed it was just a case of a wealthy buyer (Rick Schwartz) taking a big risk with money he could afford to lose.

Even though I think .mobi is a passing fad, it's too early to determine real valuations. The propping up activities will continue. Whether or not .mobi flies will not be evident for QUITE SOME TIME. Remember they're about to auction off some of the best (reserved) generics in the .mobi, including music.mobi so the market won't be left to settle into it's natural state for a while yet.

I think everyone knows that dot mobi is a fad, even dot mobi speculators, hint that yes they know - but they already recoup their money back and in the black. So what??

Are we going to play IDN like they play dot moby? I think no long term IDNer would want to kill the golden goose - IDNs, we can earn till the day when domains become obsolete.

although i do not think that this name is worth what they paid, i do think it is a good name... the name is synonymous with gambling in the US, and sportsbook.com is a huge betting site. Basically if .mobi did take off this would be one i would like to have. However, 100k+ im with you Alpha, doesnt add up to me.

It makes no sense, though. Why have a separate extension for mobile when everyone uses browser detection and redirects. That's what we've always done (IE vs Netscape for you oldtimers).

The browser is different. No big deal. We have ways of dealing with that. Why a new extension?

Why not .ff for Firefox, .ie for Internet Explorer, or even .lcd for LCD monitors versus .crt? Because extensions have nothing to do with the OS, browser, monitor, or PC manufacturer. That is the point of port 80. It is platform independent. No .sun, .mac, or .pc. Just dot com, net, org, and the rest by organization type.

Am I missing something? It seems so stupid.

No, but Rick has and he has spent a lot of money trying to hype something that ain't going to fly. Lets face it the US is probably about fourth among major mobile markets. In the other markets, even the major players would be struggling to understand what they are on about.
