This weeks DNJ - more mobi mania

Let me put my cards on the table to start off on the topic of .mobi

I have 3 .mobi's - i have no idea if they will return anything from an investment perspective.

Ricks flowers.mobi, i don't think this is as dumb as some of you make out. He can afford the price tag, the name fits the mobile shopping market and its a 1 word name.

but what has got me dumbfounded is this: Sportsbook.mobi commanding the big bucks - a whopping $129,800 in a private sale

now, i don't want to focus on the .mobi part, i want to focus on the "sportsbook" part.

why on earth would anyone spend 100k+ on an americanism term, and instantly alienate anyone not from USA.

i had to google sportsbook to look it up, sure I have heard of it, but its never a term i have written, said or seen outside of the U.S

at least with Ricks domain, a worldwide flower delivery service is viable - but sportsbook - I just don't get it.

sportsbooks (even tho its not gambling) is a hot term in america... this market alone is worth it to that investor.

Yup, billions of $$ change hands on sports betting (even though illegeal in most states besides Nevada) in the US with Superbowl as the epitome of all this. Don't be surprised at all.

yes, and thats the only place I ever saw it, when i was in vegas.

Maybe I am being naive, but i just can't help thinking that with only 1 previous big ticket sale of a mobi, a buyer with 100k+ could have got a lot better. something not gambling related, something not illegal in most states, something shorter, a 1 word, something that isnt just a US term.

I agree with Alpha. Even poker or casino seems better. However, even people with xxx,xxx to spend on domains can take a 'gamble' on a domain. We heard a lot of banter about the early IDN sales over $1,000. They said we were crazy, or that it was rigged, etc. So, don't throw stones...

No legitimate US-based gaming corporation would (or could) buy that name, by the way.

Of course not. It's probably a "carribean-based" outfit that will provide the venue for the millions of Gringos who gamble on sports.

What is obvious from DNJ is that this sales initially went down about 6 weeks ago. A lot has happened since then. The buyer who originally asked for Non-Disclosure appears to have had a change of heart. Perhaps, after wanting to keep the lid on prices, he too wants to try to resuscitate the Dot Mobi market now.

It is interesting to note that Bets.mobi is on Auction at Sedo with a day to go.

Current bid is $4,500. Reserve not met.

No but this a sale that has been dragged back to the death. Under normal circumstances this would have been reported Mid-December.
