I don't think that high of a percentage of people search by typing in the term and extension (word.com)... unless they are going to a specific know website; ie google.com, or yahoo.com etc..

If I am searching for cheap hotels in London...I would search for "Cheap Hotels London" not CheapHotelsLondon.com. "Cheap Hotels London" give me the list of best ranked pages from which I choose the best ones to search throughu.

Accented IDN or plain, if you build a GREAT site, advertise, link, SEO, and maybe even pay for some hits via sponsoring the link you have a good chance to make your site a success.
Actually Bill, apparently 10-15% of all the searches conducted occur in precisely that manner. Type in keyword and add .com. I confess to having done the same before I got into domaining - now I just do it out of curiousity. I don't disagree with the idea that it is superior to build a great site however....
You are right about the "type in" factor; lets hope that it catches on in Japan, China, Russia, Thailand etc.

On one of my Japanese sites (~100 uv a day), I'm seeing 11% IE7 now. Good times, good times.

Hey Gamma, what are you using to track your stats? Analytics doesn't seem to be reporting IE7

That does seem like good news.

Has there been a sudden jump in the frequency of IE7?

Is it possible that AU has started in Japan?

I'm using stattracker for the site in question.

I've got the unpaid version so I see breakdowns for the last 100 visitors, but it's been consistently 10%-11% over thousands of visits.

IIRC IE7 share at the beginning of the year was about 1% for this site. I now wish I had kept some notes on this.

This is a sporting domain, so it's got nothing to do with tech savvy webmasters manually downloading IE7 -- my guess is that the AU spigot has opened a little more in Japan.

Up until recently the AU spigot was definitely closed, although IE7 has always been available for manual download.

The delay for Japan was announced beginning of November and loosely put as 6 months.

That would bring us well into the Window where AU might have started.

This is the first indication that any of us have had that this may have happened. If it has things could start to happen quite quickly. Browser support is the key to rolling out IDN web content. The two should start to feed off one another.

Here's the last 100:

drill down 80 80.00% MSIE 6.0
drill down 10 10.00% MSIE 7.0
drill down 4 4.00% Firefox 2.0.0
drill down 3 3.00% MSIE 5.5
drill down 2 2.00% Safari 1.2
drill down 1 1.00% MSIE 5.01

And it's statcounter.com not stattracker.

Well from that it would seem that IE7 might be out of the starting blocks.

Internet Explorer -- 93.15%
Firefox -- 3.85%
Safari -- 2.12%
Netscape -- 0.65%
Mozilla -- 0.19%
Mozilla Compatible Agent -- 0.04%

Internet Explorer:
6.0
5.5
5.0
5.23
5.17
5.01
5.22
5.16

Many say it is a glitch and analytics doesn’t, for whatever reason show IE7 and a breakdown of what platform they are using gives me this: (Vista accounts for 1 visitor)

XP -- 85.06%
2000 -- 9.83%
98 -- 4.71%
NT -- 0.24%
ME -- 0.08%
Vista -- 0.04%
Server 2003 -- 0.04%

These figures are for the last 7 days and 2,599 unique visitors

It is possible that the single Vista user was using Firefox.
