Can you list some big companies using Chinese .com?
By the way, I was born in China and got my college degree there.

In terms of "brand", 中国 is the strongest "brand" in China, since everyone knows it no matter they know internet or not.

Possible in the future, but not at the moment. Why ppl eat mcdonalds in china? Will you eat mcdonalds if one meal costs at least $20? I'll certainly not, and most people in singapore won't eat mcdonalds if one meal costs S$20.

Here is a list of working Chinese .cn names. There are certainly more.

奥运门票.CN (Olympic tickets)
卡西欧.cn (CASIO)
宝马.cn (redirect to BMW.com.cn)
本田.cn (redirect to honda.com.cn)
海尔.cn (redirect to haier.com)
康佳.cn (redirect to konka.com)
一汽.cn (redirect to faw.com.cn, the first auto manufacturer of China)

Look at the top 100 Chinese websites here
China - Alexa Top 100Sites
The majority of these giants are dot coms, they will simply not rebrand their presences to dot cns.

Sina (新浪) uses .cn has it's own reason. It is a global web company having portals of sina.com.tw, sina.com.hk, sina.com.cn etc targeting different regions of the world. The com is set up for North America region. Of course they HAVE TO use .cn for the Mainland region.

If you live in China, you will see that the vast majority of advertisements are in Chinese.com format. You will also find that some advertised Chinese.coms actually having no websites set up. People just love the "Chinese.com" format; it's like a fashion (some people blindly copy other people's ad format).

卡西欧.com (CASIO)

.com is certainly more popular in China now. My point is not about now.

That top 100 websites does not mean much since .cn is relatively new compared to .com. If I trust that it is very scary (I do not see any IDN there!).

I do see a lot of Chinese.com advertisement. But they will not produce much impact since they are small players. It is those big guys who can see the trend and make the lead.

As I said before, I believe both .cn and .com will be good. So I buy both names. Actually, my .com portfolio is much larger than my .cn. As long as one of them takes off, I will be happy. There are so many people on forums/blogs talking from their own portfolios.

CASIO has both .cn and .com. They even have .net!

Maybe 50-100 years later, but definitely not in 20 years.

You got Starbucks and Yakun (a local coffee chain, ask Mulligan what this is) operating in the same shopping malls in Singapore, often just opposite each other. Starbucks charges nearly $4 for a regular cuppachino while Yakun charges $0.90 for a cup of coffee.

Starbucks biz in Singapore is very good, no closing of stores, they are opening more.

And the american craze is multiple times more serious in China than in Singapore.

McDonalds and Starbucks are successful businesses in many countries. In China, they provide products/services other Chinese businesses do not.

If you look at Baidu and Google, you see a different story. Baidu is not providing as quality service as Google, in my opinion. At least they are similar. But Baidu has much more market share than google (more than 60% vs 20%). One reason someone believe is that Baidu is a Chinese company and Google is a foreign company. Chinese do like their own companies. Baidu played some dirty tricks some years ago. But it is a company with limited power.

.cn is the only business of CNNIC, who is backed up by government. .cn means a lot of money for CNNIC. Promoting .cn is also a national interest of China, like in Russia.

I know some people do not like what I said, especially those who still want to buy more .cn. Unfortunately, I do not have any travel plan this July 4th...

Actually, this is not exactly true, the dispute of .com versus .cn has been around since day one, this is not a new topic and i was arguing with RD over this even 2 years ago.

As matter of fact, i've been taking a middle stance until very recently, when the lack of type-in for .cn, and the insecurity (fact that names over 2 mths old were deleted) made me decide to place lesser weight on .cn (i'll still looking, but less enthusiastic as previously).

The lack of type-in is the most astonishing part since we know that chinese ISPs are resolving IDN.cn using web redirect. For info, they don't do that for IDN.com.
