Nope, just market forces.

Domains that don't mean anything won't hold up as well as keyword, commercial domains in this environment.

Agree. Domains have been hyped by category.

Three letters are good for branding if they fit your need, but beyond that it is difficult. Shorten by one letter and the brandability goes up exponentially. Get down to one letter and the sky is the limit.

At the end of the day these are worth precisely what the market is willing to pay.
