Default A couple of draft documents you should look at

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/...tionale-01.txt
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/...-tables-02.txt

Second one clearly shows that € is a dead duck!

You need to cross reference to the Unicode 5 tables, I guess.

o PROTOCOL VALID: Those that are allowed to be used in IDNs.
Codepoints with this property value are permitted for general use
in IDNs. However, that a label consists only of codepoints that
have this property value does though not imply the label can be
used in DNS. See [IDNA2008-protocol] for algorithm for how to
make decisions on domain names. The abbreviated term PVALID is
used to refer to this value in the rest of this document.

Thanks Dave !

yep ;
20A0..20B5 ; DISALLOWED # EURO-CURRENCY SIGN..CEDI SIGN

But also the dingbat numbers, actually have 3 of those.

The shitty thing is, they will adopt a new protocol, characters are allowed based on inclusion rather then exclusion...the punyconverters have to be rewritten.

All currency SIGNS are disallowed

These are still allowed since they are simply part of the CJK Ideograph characterset
元 20803 元 5143 [Yuan, in China]
円 20870 円 5186 [Yen]

Not sure the punycode converters need to be rewritten. Punycode is simply an algorithm.

What is true is that not all results generated will make valid strings for DNS support. I think that is a separate issue, which obviously needs to be addressed by Registeries. Not sure it is a big issue for IDN tool providers or evern registrars.

I think they are definitely more strict, so I at least I will have to update the nameprep tables.

The problem is, with the old nameprep I only have the relatively small exclusion list, now they are using the rather bulky inclusion list and special attention must be payed to the join-controls, supposedly mapping of these join-characters depends on the context.

There are two subdivisions of CONTEXTUAL RULE REQUIRED,
one for Join_controls (called CONTEXTJ) and and for other
characters (called CONTEXTO). These are discussed in more detail
below and in [IDNA2008-protocol].
