I had the similar thought about a year ago. I found all the great names were gone and so I registered some mediocre ones and some .net, even .biz. I thought those people with great names would not let their names go cheaply. It turned out that I was wrong.
Last year was a train crash. If next year is a repeat of last year, then you would be better off holding onto your cash. PERIOD.

If you are not the first one and/or you don't have enough money to buy it (e.g. - business.com sex.com money.com), or the domain name you prefer was went to end user;
then why not dot NET -

A very strong keyword with any extention still a nice domain name
I wouldn't go as far as to say any extension. Those that have no traction in ASCII and are not related specifically related to your target market are not likely to cut mustard with IDN. I would think .Net and Dot Org are solid with good keywords. Dot Biz is a long shot. Dot WS is for the fairies.

In fact, 99% of the IDN domainer was not the early bird like Dave & Joe -
your gentlemen starting reg. IDNs since 1999 or 2000
and you have got a lot of great keyword's IDN in dot COM in hand.
then you really don't have to find other extension...

so, the rule:

is for about +50% IDN investor

Dot net has a high recognition level in China because before .CN there was .com.cn, .net.cn and .org.cn

My advise is consider how many really cutting edge investment decisions have been made by the people you take advise from. This is why people hang on Schwartz every word. Unfortunately, the vast majority of his good Domain buys date back about 10 years. Recent performance has been much less impressive.
