Honestly, I do not get it why you still want to invest in .net. There are .com and ccTLD above .net, making .net much less valuable. In some contries, they will have IDN ccTLD, which is not aliased to ascii ccTLD. Then people have three better choices than .net. Considering IDN may be a quite long term investment, invest in .net is very risky, IMO.

Well actually, there is no ccTLD above these, yes there may well be an IDN ccTLD in the near future, which won't be aliased, but it is unlikely that you will be able to register Geos, and as a foreign speculator, incredibly unlikely that you will pick up much of great significance in view of the huge publicity that will precede the launch, and the fact that you may have to prove domicile. You may also well be faced with a less than transparent allocation procedure.

I know many of you are waiting for REAL IDN, but the liklihood is that this head up the arse approach will mean that you end up with little of any value. But I do concede that dot Net will never be dot com.

These medium to small city names in .net should be worth $100- $500 (in reality, probably a lot more) to an enduser who wants to develop them in the next few years. So if you have the money to continue to renew them, IMO your not going to lose.

Assuming you hold them for 3 years x $5.50 (or even 5 years) and have somewhere around $ 20- $25 invested, your going to make a pretty nice ROI. I am more inclined to invest in .net GEO domains than any other sector, there will always be a demand for city names, and it is relatively easy to find groups of potential end users.

I think ccTLD is certainly a better investment choice than .net no matter how the alias thing go. Even in ascii world, .net is not very strong although it is considered by many as the best alternative to .com. When it becomes the third best choice in IDN, few end users would want to buy them.

This is really personal judgment and choice. From my experience, I think right now it is a great time to buy very good names other than register "good" names. You have to aim for at least $10,000 a name in 3 to 5 years considering all the uncertainties and the high risk of domain names. I have dropped hundreds of names, which I thought would bring me back at least $1000 each in 3-5 years. With the saved renewal fees, I bought some very good and even premium names. Now my portfolio is much smaller but much better quality. I do not have any pressure from renewal. I can buy more names and start to develop a few of them.

Just do not want to see people repeat my mistake. Anyway, if you have strong faith in your judgment, go for it and good luck!

thanks for looking out.

the way i see it is i pay 180 for the 43 names i bought considering i have a year from now to really judge whether its fitting to keep them or drop them. A year from now we will all have the right understanding of what will work and what won't.

I get how you give me the advice to reduce the good names for better but my problem is all my good stuff is arabic and having played with development for arabic here and there it isn't worth it to me right now. which is why i look at other languages.

180 for 43 geo russian names to me is a pretty good investment. I'll now whether to drop these or not within a year from now.

thanks guys, ali

Yes, dot COM is the king, no doubt.
but you must be the FIRST one to get it, or you may pay more to buy it.
If you are not the first one and/or you don't have enough money to buy it (e.g. - business.com sex.com money.com), or the domain name you prefer was went to end user;
then why not dot NET -

A very strong keyword with any extention still a nice domain name

There is another option, which may be better than registering .net, .biz, .ws, etc., keep the money and wait for other opportunities.

I had the similar thought about a year ago. I found all the great names were gone and so I registered some mediocre ones and some .net, even .biz. I thought those people with great names would not let their names go cheaply. It turned out that I was wrong.
