Default Peer Names and the menace to Domains

Windows Vista will bring Peer Names, or P2P Domains. And it's a mouthful; a serverless DNS technology that allows nodes to discover each other. Think about that for a second. It allows your Windows Vista box to become its own DNS server. No need to pay $9 to register each domain name. But there's a catch; it's limited to the domain name pnrp.net.

If it ever loses the pnrp.net dependency and assumes it's full scope domainers are in deep trouble...or am I seeing this wrong?

In the first version of his book, Bill Gates proudly declared that MSN would take over the Internet as the dominant network on the planet.

This is just attempt 2.0

Get Windows computers talking to each other via ipv6 without the DNS system being involved. Route around what you can't control.

I'm not sure I understand it - have not read anything about Vista or this peer discovery service. But it doesn't sound like any threat to DNS. Any legit website is gonna need a real domain name resolved reliably and unambiguously - sounds like DNS, no? I suspect this is just a dynamic dns killer.

More here:http://apcmag.com/node/4332

Title: Every Vista PC to get a domain name

Something like: "ThisIsThePCofJohnandLouise" will resolve to the machine of John and Louise for web, email...

BUT It stils depends on pnrp.net to translate. My question is... till when? Will it really be able to use ONLY P2P and work on it's own?

damn - I'm gonna have to spend a little time reading about it

At first glance, this article makes it sounds like I was wrong - this would be an alternative to DNS. No need to worry IMO, because as I suggested before, any serious website is gonna want fast and unambiguous resolution, e.g. DNS. The DNS may be a bit old and crusty but it does work well.

Also I think the time is not very close when most commercial websites will actually want users connecting P2P. Large file sharing sites yes. Most websites no. It just does not sound like an efficient use of resources for most situations.

Would everything be a subdomain of pnrp.net? I sure don't want my PCs accessible to others. This sounds like a hacker's dream!

No big deal. I don't think it will overtake DNS as we know it.

Your going to have to go some to convince Americans that they want to be a Sub-Domain of a Dot Net!
