Default Google search "behavior"

When entering the letter r to the browser window, (google as default search engine) it navigates to r-project .org ...when entering i.e the letter w it does not take you to w3 or to w hotels...just to search results for w...

What makes google decide which way to go...directly to what it feels is the most important site on the searched term/letter or to search results?

also, google tracks "direct navigation" ...as when entering i.e the word test ...goes to search results and you can see "sourceid=navclient" in the url line...anyway google would report the % via direct nav? probably not...
