Default Internationalized Domain Names Coming Next Year

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061121-8266.html

Now, I understand that positive IDN press is very important, but if they are going to be off the mark like this, is it worth it?

arstechnica isn't on the level of CNN etc.

it is a very popular tech site like techzone etc. It's a whole different base. I wouldn't worry.

First sign that ICANN "bricks" report is starting to do its damage.

But never mind, as long as the PPC starts coming in, who cares? It's just a matter of waiting, and maybe more time to acquire names.

Frankly, we are probably the only ones that give a damned about the rubbish that ICANN spouts in the press. Even they know it is only there to put the pack off the scent!

You know what.. I've been to the States a number of times on business and vacation trips, and I have to say that I thought Americans are among the most curtious I have met. They really do have customer service down to a tee.

but since getting into IDN's I am constantly amazed at the ignorance most Americans seem to have. This whole "the USA is the saviour of the world, and we made it first we own it" attitude...

Hello... America is not the centre on the Universe, not everyone wants to drive a Mustang or eat yourself to death.

another comment from another ignorant arse on the introduction of IDN's: "Boo hoo. When someone else goes through the expense of developing the internet, countless vaccines, space exploration, etc THEN they can start pissing and moaning about such things.

Hey, I am glad that the net is international, and becoming more and more accessible to everyone on the planet. But the impertinence with which these demands are met just pisses me off. We developed it, we pay for its lion share of administration, our requirements come first. Good thing too, otherwise it would have been hopelessly fragmented and federated already, and we would all lose."

you can read more junk here: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/...ca.com&x_ddp=Y

... and if you are American and you are reading this, I am not pointing the finger at you. In fact the chances are that if you are reading this, you are probably in the minority who believe there is more to planet earth than the good ol' USA.

Am I calling Americans stupid? NO far from it. But it is a fact that less than 5% of Americans leave education with any secondary language skills, and theres also a statistic I can't remember that shows how few have ever actually visited another country.

I think all this is simply a symptom of ignorance created by the lack of embracing any other cultures, which makes responses like you read in that thread and on other forums all the more natural.

rant over.

one in four Americans has a passport.
This might sound very few, but considering that America is a half a continent, for someone far from the border, travelling might involve some long distance, so i thought might be fine.

Really depends on the area.

In NY, (at least this part) you are required to take a language throughout high school. You also have to take one during college.

I couldn't agree more. And as a gun-totin', McDonald's-eatin', Walmart-shoppin', tobacco-spittin', livin'-in-the-Midwestern-Heartland American, I must say that I grow increasingly frustrated (and sometimes embarassed) by posts like the ones on the arstechnica discussion board, or the somewhat infamous "Acroplex Thread."

I'm obviously being facetious with my stereotypical description of being American, but really, this "it's all about us" attitude needs an adjustment - it has gotten America into countless troubles already - and it is one of the reasons why I enjoy IDN investing; I want to be there when the egocentric, Americentric folks out there realize that the world is passing them by.
