Default Chinese domain names standardized internationally

The Chinese Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) announced in Beijing on November 30 that the "Registration and Administration Recommendations for Chinese Domain Names", formulated by the Chinese, have been approved by the International Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and are now the international standard.

International standards for the Chinese internet have already received direct support from the main producer of global internet trade. The largest supplier of browser software, Microsoft, will adopt this standard in its latest version, Internet Explorer 7.0. This is a basic standard for the development of a global Chinese internet.

The international standard for the Chinese internet was actually formulated eight years ago, when Chinese engineers formed an alliance with experts from Japan, Korea. This alliance regularly communicated with IETF until they had their approval and support.

It doesn't mean much, but it is good news. What it is telling me is that the Chinese Government is going to some lengths to publicise the information that we based our investment decisions on. This means you can expect a lot of me too type behaviour anytime soon.

Good. Although this of course is all about the .CN so lets hope it doesnt make its way into the default extension for the Chinese IE7 version.

It also means that they will make .gongsi seperate from .com permanent. Since CNNIC seems to oversee the 3rd party organization selling them. They aren't going to change anything. the .chinese characters representing their version of .com are here to stay as mentioned years ago.

China can do what they like under the .CN extension. They cannot do anything at the top level or indeed anything anywhere else without either splitting the root, which they have committed not to do, or without getting ICANN agreement. Frankly, I have no strong feelings on the matter. If it don't resolve to the dot Com registry it isn't dot com.

whats to think in a few years that people in china will not want .gongsi over .com due to the "coolness" factor?

Stuff can change. One year something can be hot and the next year it will be triumped by the opponent.

.info used to suck. Now it's gonna beat .net soon

so.... theres a possible outcome that .net could be dnamed to a chinese .net idn equivalent, simply based on the logic that is doesnt yet exist - so therefore COULD happen.

so maybe .net will be the saviour.
