I Don't think its a good comparison...yes some domains can also appear similar but there is no way they will allow that similarity on the extension

Rather they go with .rf or .rus is fine...as long as they finally map .com/net and make idn's what they're meant to be...A domain in a local language..all 100% of that.

ICANN are already on the case Russia will not get something confusingly similar to .py

I suppose that a Cyrillic .py is not really the same as an ASCII .py (same could be said for any Romanized Cyrillic domain like ytpo.com vs утро.com or so on) so .py Cyrillic might work anyway. That is my assumption.
