Survey shows sharp increase of computer use in Greece

The use of computers and of the Internet marked a significant increase in Greece last year, according to "National Research on Technologies and the Society of Information" for the year 2006 which was published in Athens on Monday.

The survey shows that 31.0 percent of the Greek population uses computers while 24.6 percent of the population uses the Internet.

The increase observed in comparison to 2005 is 14 percent and 26 percent respectively.

The possession and use of mobile phones also increased in the country, according to the survey. The possession and use of mobile phones reached 77.6 percent of the Greek population, continuing its upward trend in recent years.

"These results are encouraging on the rate of new users of new technologies and of the Internet. There has been a marked increase these past years of the broadband links and use of computers and of the Internet in the Greek population," Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas said on Monday.

The survey was conducted by the National Research and Technology Network, a body supervised by Greek Development Ministry.

Expect more internet usage since this past year adsl service became cheaper than dial-up and available almost everywhere

Greeks can be slow to adapt to new things sometimes, but when they do, they tend to overkill.

Five years ago, most of my acquaintances didn't know what a browser was. Last year I had people come up to me to "inform" me about the .eu launch.

Times do change, and so do people.

Eventually, they'll learn to use the f*-ing address bar for direct navigation...

We can only live in hope.

From experience, the Greeks are still way behind in terms of internet use.

I'll give you an example of what happened today. A client calls us up and says there email is not working. We spend half an hour going through all the setting, making sure everything is correct. We remove and install the email several times, in case of any small errors in the cofiguration of it.

Eventually, I ask " Are you actually connected to the internet ? "

The reply ...

" What ?? - You mean I have to be connected to the internet to get my emails ? "

And this isn't actually the first time I have had this exact same thing happen.

But over the last 2-3 years, things do seem to be slowly getting better - however, the Greeks still have a lot to learn.
