you cann't remove "the" from arabic geographic noun or person name if it comes with "the" and vice versa

in this case the IDN without "the" is a fairly popular arabic person's name "Reyad" it also means "gardens"

in case of alquds ... the version without "the" may be quds in persian but the arabic quds needs "the"

hope that helps and doesn't ruin any of your sales ....)))

Thanks Gee. No, no, I thank you for that.

But I still don't get it. They mean "Riyadh" and "The Riyadh", right? So why can't you remove the "The"?! We have discuss lot's of times here and everywhere about arabic names with and without the "The" (Al) and it seems like WITH the "The" is, most of the cases, a better option, but I have never heard of the impossibility of removing the "The"... If that's the case, why does arabic wikipedia redirects "Riyadh" to "The Riyadh"?!

Anyway and about my auctions, everyone is free to redraw it's bids if they consider it so. However, I have stated very clearly since the begining that the name is without the "THE". I think it is common sense that if the name was with the "The" the price would, of course be much more higher!!! AND I see Arabic members bidding, so it can't be THAT bad.

Sometimes "the" enhances the value of a domain since it just makes more sense with it. I agree with Gee 100%... (the)Riyad would be more valuable. This one seems to just be a name... but can work.

Wikipedia isn't the greatest when it comes to some words... I usually go with what seems to flow better with the tongue. Of course, yours would have still been reg'd by me if it were available.

arabic geographic names are not like general nouns ....... library, the library

if it comes with "the" .... don't remove "the" to get another version as you may thought of

if it comes without "the" ..... don't add "the" to get another version

for example saudiarabia and iraq come with "the"...... alsaudyia and aliraq

while lebanon and oman come without "the"..... lebnan and 3oman

in brief: don't play with "the" in the geographic names

it is not as fka200 said ..

you will not get a lesser valuable version but instead you may distort the meaning

you may notice the difference from google results but quds gets much results from persian websites not arabic

This is very important, because if it is like that, we have been getting the wrong idea all along.

Please confirm this them: what you are saying is that:

WE CAN'T TRANSLATE "THE" AS "THE", RIGHT?!

Please all Arabic members who speak Arabic give their contribution. This is a major issue.

Well what I said wasn't really intended on geo domains, but I still stand by what I said.

IMO, "the" is translated as "the". Sometimes it just works better, and sometimes it doesn't. I'll try to write more on what I know... although Gee does make more sense in what he wrote.... except I disagree with the distorting the meaning in terms of "general" words. Hard to type on a PDA...

I have solved the issue, well, kind of:

http://ال.رياض.net

It is an IDN subdomain (xn--mgb2d.xn--mgbtq2f.net) but, as it is Arabic the order is inverted and it shows just fine anywhere!

(It doesn't resolve yet, but it will in a couple of hours. I just did it and dns are propagating)
